Tractor Pull in Ontario, Wisconsin

a wonderful digression on the road home

Tractor Pull in Ontario, Wisconsin

Chas Porter's suggestion that we camp in Wildcat Mountain State Park. The nearest town is a friendly little burgh called Onterio, Wisconsin. Both the park and the town are along Highway 33, an amazingly beautiful road you can take from LaCrosse to Madison.

The road was so beautiful on the way to Milwaukee that we decided to take it back home. Passing through Onterio, Wisconsin again the other way the town was still celebrating the 4th of July.

Jules hadn't seen a tractor pull. Now she has.

Johnny Northside Gets Served at His Own Fundraiser

Johnny Northside Gets Served at His Own Fundraiser

Johnny Northside Gets Served at His Own Fundraiser

On Saturday June 27th John Hoff (Johnny Northside) http://www.adventuresofjohnnynorthside.blogspot.com/ was served with a subpoena while we were attending a fundraiser for the movie John and the Northside. John immediately began reading the summons as theater. It was hilarious.

There are few people who work more tirelessly for the good of North Minneapolis. Over the last few months John and I have had our run-ins and disagreements, but in all that time I never entertained the thought of suing him. Jerry Moore (the guy that sued Johnny) and Al Flowers (who sues everyone else) have made small sport of the troubles that the Northside is dealing with by suing people who displease them.

How else are we to deal with all of these frivolous law suits than to make light of them? People are dying because of what is wrong on the Northside. People who have done everything as right as they know how are homeless on the Northside. And these hypersensitive "civic leaders" spend money suing penniless Johnny Northside because their sensitivities have been bruised.

We may be laughing at a Johnny Northside fundraiser, but we are just one snicker in a chorus of laughter In North Minneapolis. Give it up boys. Let's all get on the same team. The Northside needs all of our our energy for real issues.

Congressman Keith Ellison’s Transportation Forum

Every now and then I get to spend time with titans.

Congressman Keith Ellison’s Transportation Forum

A meeting of titans gathered on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 after The North Minneapolis Transportation Forum. Seated around the table: Jonah Ogiamien, Congressman Keith Ellison, Adolfo Rudy Cardona, Nghi Huynh and Al McFarlane. In the background—the Congressman's staff. Everyone around the table but the congressman are members of the Minnesota Multicultural Coalition. They gathered to interview Mr. Ellison.

The more I shoot the more I want to shoot

Photo Galleries

Click on the photo above to see the people gallery.

I am showing two collections of photos: people and places.
The People Gallery is a mix of event coverage, portraiture and editorial. The line between portraiture and street photography has always been blurry in my photography. The work in this gallery exemplifies this thin line.
The Places Collection covers my work in the building community and travel photography from the heart of Hollywood to the plains of western North Dakota. Composition is king in this entire collection.

Caption: William R. Morrish is an architect, designer, author, and educator. Since 2001, he has held the Elwood R. Quesada Professor of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Environmental Planning at University of Virginia where he teaches, leads research, and practices in the areas of sustainable urban infrastructure, new medium density housing models, and global urbanization and climate change. Morrish was formerly the Director of the Design Center at the University of Minnesota. His address was a dynamic and spirited presentation of his new book, Growing Urban Habitats: Seeking a New Housing Development Model.

I finally got around to posting a couple of web galleries of my work on this sight. Just click on the logo at the top of this page to be taken to the home page. Both of the links are in the photos for People and Places. A Panorama Gallery and a Things Gallery are not far behind.
The real impetus to finish these galleries came from several sources. a well known writer in the twin cities, Andrea Johnson, wanted to recommend my photos. Thanks Andrea. Both for the recommendation and for that extra little push.
I also attended a symposium called Rethinking Housing: Designing and Building Affordable, Sustainable Housing Throughout the Twin Cities Region. The event was held at Dorsey & Whitney law firm. I took a camera—just because. As it turned out there weren't many other people shooting this fascinating presentation.
I got a lot out of the conference and a couple of published photos.

Savage Aural Hotbed

Just as funky as ever

Savage Aural Hotbed

Industrial music is still alive and well in Minneapolis. Savage Aural Hotbed thrilled the crowd at 1st Avenue. This concert was their 20th anniversary.

Not all my panoramics are skinny strips. This image is two photos stitched together so that I could get the entire band in one frame.

Hoping to See a Better Year

The quality of the year coming up is dependent on your point of view

Hoping to See a Better Year

I wanted to put up a snow covered photo from Christmas Eve. The day was grey and cloudy. So I came into the Kravits' house and found a wealth of images. Happy holidays.

The Race for Governor Begins

Susan Gaertner explains her campaign positions at Daine Berthel's home

The Race for Governor Begins

General wisdom holds that no one pays any attention to elections until the last weeks before the vote. Attending a November 7th event at investment management consultant, Diane Berthel's home makes it clear that this paradigm has shifted. The mood was as serious as the Minnesota political situation.

I can only hope the rest of the voting population is listening as hard and asking as many good questions as the group Diane assembled.

If you click on the photo, above, you will be taken to Susan Gaertner's gubernatorial race web site

Why The Heck Aren't There More Photos From The North Dakota Trip?

Wheat Pano

I spent way too much of this weekend trying to make a print with the luminosity and pop that this jpg/web image has. I can imagine, compose and photograph great images. I want to print them as well.

With the demise of Minnesota Center for Photography guys like me are adrift. Man, I miss that place.

Upon Spending a Long Weekend in Los Angeles

Photography in LA has its rewards.

Upon Spending a Long Weekend in Los Angeles

There’s lots to love and wonder about in Los Angeles. My perspective is that of a midwesterner. So it may seem naive, but here goes. I'll start with the "wonder about" part.

Wonder:
Is there no one paying any attention to signage ordinances? The entire area is a visual cacophony that makes the Mall of America look like a prairie.

We rented a car while in LA. You learn to drive a lot slower than we're use to in Minneapolis. Idling cars produce lots of pollution.

Love:
Los Angeles is a great place to be a photographer. People there love to be photographed. I think it's because so many people are trying to be in the entertainment industry. Their sure that the next photo will be the one that gets them noticed. People practice their best pose just waiting for the next photographer coming by.

Here's an Angelino posing in front of LACMA. This is her putting film in the camera pose. Fetching.

A perfect day for the fair

August 24, 2008

Jules and I went to the fair. I need no excuse for such activity, but we do have a client there making the worlds greatest french fries.

The french fries are truly excellent. The Worlds Greatest French Fries is on Dan Patch and Underwood. Give them a try.

The day was perfect. This was the scene as we headed out of the midway.

The North Dakota Trip

Day One

The North Dakota Trip

For years I have been promising and threatening to drive across North and South Dakota to make photos. This year for ten glorious days in July, Jules and I scurried around the Dakotas stopping every time the light looked right.

Jules got pretty comfortable with my Nikon D200 and D300. Between the two of us we shot nearly 3,000 frames. I'm going to post them regularly on this blog.

Here is the first one. It's a photo of the City Center Motel in Devils Lake, North Dakota. This one was shot at 10:22 p.m. on the 4th of July at ISO 800, shot manually at 1/80 @ ƒ4.0.

So far I've barely begun to edit all the images. I'm somewhere into day 2 of ten days. Stop back from time to time and I'll regale you with photos and tall tails of buffalos and mountain tops.

The Older I Get

Amaryllis on the coldest winter day

The Older I Get

The older I get the more I feel the need to communicate something lasting. I don’t think a blog is the lasting part I hope the blog becomes a forum for working out these ideas, gathering and disseminating knowledge I’ve gained and connecting with others who can help me and whom I can help. This blog will ramble on and on about design, photography, politics, culture and the society we live in. Feel free to add to this conversation any time you’d like.

I took some sanity time today at the Walker Art Center before photographing a cast member for one of Perrin Post's new productions.

Jen Burleigh-Bentz was one of the leads in The History Theater's presentation of Hormel Girls and Buffalo Gal's Legendary Ladies. She's a cooperative and willing subject.

I can't wait to see what this new role entails.
